Tanner out; Herron drops governor bid, runs for Congress

U.S. Rep. John Tanner announced suddenly that he will not be seeking reelection to the Eighth District congressional seat.

State Senator Roy Herron, a Democrat from Dresden, had been running for governor; but in an e-mail sent to supporters early Wednesday, he announced that he will be running for the now-open U.S. House seat.

There will be much more to come on what this means for the Democratic gubernatorial primary, as Herron has been among the leading candidates; and what Tanner's exit means for Democrats nationally in the 2010 midterm elections.
