Fidel Castro

A big news item today is the resignation by Cuban leader Fidel Castro, whom many undoubtedly expected to only leave office upon dying.

I wish the best for the people of Cuba, and for their close neighbors to the north, as each nation maneuvers through this time of transition.

While the thought of the island as a tourism destination certainly is tantalizing, let's make sure we look at the whole picture as we move forward. I'm not saying to rule out opening up travel by any means (after all, I want the local food just as much as anyone, though I suppose I could get it in Miami now), but I'm thinking that there are many aspects to this relationship that need to remain in broad focus.

Yeah right. Castro's been dead since the 80's.

I am in agreement that it'd be great if this opened the door for travel (or even cigars for that matter), but the bigger picture is that the people of Cuba may be closer to getting out from under decades of oppressive rule. Of course, if Castro's brother becomes president I don't think things will change dramatically overnight (perhaps over time as they have in China?). Also, the Helms-Burton Act states that the embargo cannot be lifted if either Fidel or Raul are in power.

I have tremendous admiration for the Cuban
people and my current dream is to meet Fidel
Castro. I would love to study and write about
Cuba and learn how the people truly live and
are they happy.
